Volquartsen Firefly Bolt Is Available Again
Suppressors are hot in the U.S. shooting market right now, and that means a renewed interest in subsonic ammunition—if your bullets aren’t breaking the sound barrier, it’s a lot easier to stay stealthy. And for that reason, the rimfireologists at Volquartson have brought the Firefly bolt back into production.

Keeping quiet
The Volquartsen Firefly isn’t an all-new product. Pete first told TFB readers about this bolt back in 2016, when it was introduced, specifically designed to fit Ruger 10/22 rifles:
The Firefly 10/22 Bolt is specifically designed to cycle subsonic .22LR ammunition like the CCI Quiet-22 line. Most semiautomatic guns won’t cycle the lower powered ammunition because of the insufficient force required to blow back the bolt. Volquartsen has changed the bolt, recoil rod and spring to allow for super quiet shots even without the use of a quality rimfire suppressor.
It’s the same idea for the once-again-available Firefly bolt.
A successful formula
The back-in-production Firefly bolt is made of hard anodized aluminum, designed to cycle a wide range of subsonic ammo, the company says—including CCI Quiets at a poky 710 fps to other subsonic .22 LR loads that are rated at 1050 fps. The bolt comes with two standard springs which allow the shooter to fine-tune their rifle to whatever ammo they prefer. The precision-ground and hardened recoil rod is designed for easy spring changes, with no more than 0.001-inch variance over the length of the rod for smooth cycling.
Volquartsen includes a titanium firing pin and heavy-duty extractor with the bolt and built a hardened steel lug into the bolt to prevent hammer wear.
Of course, shooters without suppressors can also enjoy the peace and quiet of shooting subsonic rounds if they install the Firefly bolt in their Ruger 10/22.
Volquartsen Firearms big boss Scott Volquartsen said “It’s safe to say that shooting suppressed 22s has never been more popular than it is right now. With increasing customer demand, we decided there was no better time to bring back the Firefly Bolt.”
Pricing for the Volquartsen Firefly 2.0 is $170; see more info at their website.
