[SHOT 2025] Mossberg Means Business With Updated Shotguns

Mossberg announced a lineup of improved tactical shotguns just before SHOT Show, including a “tactical turkey blaster” (our words, not theirs). Let’s take a look at what’s on offer.

New rotary safety models

The tang safety on Mossberg’s shotguns makes them more usable by left-handed shooters, but it also makes it hard to use them with a pistol grip. Mossberg’s solution is to offer the new 590R lineup, with a rotary safety similar to what you’d find on a tactical rifle or carbine.

Instead of putting your thumb behind the receiver to manipulate the safety, these models let you flip the safety on and off via the switch on the side of the receiver. There’s a switch on each side of the receiver, so like the older tang safety, this updated lineup is friendly to right-handed and left-handed shooters.

The 590R series includes the 590R and 590R Stand-Off, both with collapsible AR-style stock, a 6+1 tube magazine, and a stand-off muzzle attachment on the Stand-Off model. Mechanically, except for the safety, these are the same as the old 590 series (and the 500 series, and the 835 series, etc.). MSRP for the 590R models is $1,085.

There are also two new box magazine-fed shotguns with the new rotary safety. The 590RM and 590RM Stand-Off (with muzzle attachment) feed from 10-round mags. Like the tube-mag model, the standard RM shotgun comes with Magpul MBUS 3 sights while the Stand-Off does not. For now, the mag-fed shotgun series is only available in 2.75-inch chambering. MSRP for the RM models is $1,190. See more details on each individual shotgun at Mossberg’s website here.

Tactical Turkey in .410

Mossberg isn’t afraid to mix and match ideas. In this case, we get a tactical style turkey gun in the lightest shotgun chambering available. Sounds crazy, but Mossberg says there’s demand for this sort of thing, and they’re meeting it. And the way they’ve put this thing together, if you pick your ammo carefully and dial your load in, you should absolutely be able to bag a gobbler next season.

This gas-operated semi-auto comes with a 3-inch chamber, 4+1 tube mag, fiber optic ghost ring sights, a Picatinny rail pre-mounted on the receiver, and a synthetic pistol grip-style stock. It’s a modern setup for one of the most traditional pursuits in the world. MSRP is $902. More info here.

940 Pro Tactical SPX variants

The 940 Pro Tactical SPX 5-Shot is very similar to the Thunder Ranch model released in 2024, but without some of the touches baked in by Clint Smith and his crew (see the TFBTV review here). It’s also set up for the Shield RMSc optic footprint, with adapters for RMR, Docter and Leupold.

The receiver cut is low enough that you can still see through to use the shotgun’s fiber-optic sight.

The furniture is the same as the Thunder Ranch gun, adjustable from 12.5 to 14.4 inches. It has oversized controls as well, for easy handling under pressure. It comes with a Vang Comp 6-shotshell carrying system pre-installed (the Thunder Ranch gun does not). Ghost ring sights are standard (also not standard on the Thunder Ranch gun), and the receiver is drilled and tapped. Asking price is $1,190,and you can have the 5-shot model in any color you want, as long as that color is basic black (blued barrel).

Mag capacity is 5+1, and the shotgun comes set up for the Accu-Choke system, with cylinder choke installed. See more here.

Mossberg sells the 8-shot variant of this shotgun for the same $1,190 price tag. This version comes with a flashlight holder included, mounted between the barrel and tube mag at the gun’s business end.

And if you want, Mossberg also sells this shotgun with an optic pre-installed as well— adding a Holosun Micro Dot puts the price up to $1,371. Another variation, 940 Pro Tactical SPX Cerakote, comes with a 7-shot tube mag installed and OD Green Cerakote on the metal. Asking price is $1,246.

Or get it in Flat Dark Earth, if you prefer, for the same price.

940 Pro Turkey – Holosun/Indian Creek Combo

Available exclusively through distributor TALO, this shotgun comes pre-accessorized with a premium Indian Creek Diamond Strike ported turkey choke and a Holosun micro dot.

There’s a Patriot Brown Cerakote job on the metal, and Kryptek Obscura Trans finish on the furniture. And of course it has all the same features as a standard Mossberg 940 Pro.

The MSRP is $1,581; see more info here.
