[SHOT 2025] Miller Precision Firearms to Produce the Serbu SU-15 Upper
Miller Precision Firearms, a manufacturer from Sarasota, Florida, will be producing and selling the SU-15 piston upper receiver assembly designed by Mark Serbu of Serbu Firearms. Originally this upper was called SU-15, but the MPF’s version will likely be called Avangard. Let’s take a quick look at the features of this upper.

The receiver itself of the Avangard/SU-15 upper assembly is made out of an aluminum extrusion and is one-piece with the handguard. The lower section of the handguard is removeable to give access to the barrel change mechanism. The system is short stroke piston driven with an adjustable gas block. The non-reciprocating charging handle is reversible. The action cycles within the dimensions of the receiver so the lower receiver does not have to have a buffer tube. The disassembly of this upper is toolless.
Despite being so different from the AR-15, this upper assembly actually has quite a high rate of compatibility with the AR-15 and I don’t mean just the fact it’s designed to work with any mil-spec lower receiver. The Avangard/SU-15 upper uses standard AR-15 barrels and its bolt carrier group utilizes standard AR-15 bolts (without gas rings), firing pins and cam pins.
According to Miller Precision Firearms reps, the uppers will be available in four to six months and will have an MSRP of about $1500 to $1800. The company plans to later introduce full rifles built with these upper receivers. We’ll report as soon as these products are available. Stay tuned!
