POTD: The New Austrian Sturmgewehr 77 A1 MOD “Nightfighter” Edition
Photo Of The Day: If you expected the Austrian Army to do like the United Kingdom and procure a few new automatic rifles, you were wrong. As reported before, the Austrians are getting the Sturmgewehr 77 A1 MOD in a “Nightfighter” edition. These images are from when the third Jägerbrigade recently got their upgrades Steyr AUGs. The upgrade is further enhanced by the inclusion of night vision goggles from Theon, significantly improving the units’ night vision and reconnaissance capabilities.
The new rifles feature an Aimpoint Micro T2 red dot sight for rapid target acquisition and an optic for engaging targets at longer distances. The cost of the modification was €10.7 million. In total, the four land brigades, the Guard, the 8th Jäger Battalion, the Army Troops School, and the Theresian Military Academy will receive 4,000 77 “Nightfighter” assault rifles.
In addition to the optics, the surface finish has also been modified. This reduces the effectiveness of enemy night vision devices. But – in my opinion – it also makes the rifle look like it was made for those green plastic soldiers.
The 77 A1 Mod “Nightfighter” assault rifle features a length-adjustable folding handle with a recess for the cable switch of the tactical laser light module. This module is mounted on a Picatinny rail on the right side of the weapon. The cocking handle can be folded into two positions.
The rifle is equipped with a length-adjustable carrying strap, which can be attached in various positions on the weapon.
