POTD: The KS-1 With Royal Marine Commandos
Freezing cold in TFB’s Photo Of The Day, as we take a closer look at the KS-1, designated L403A1, and known as the Alternative Individual Weapon (AIW) system. The AIW system includes a Vortex 1–10x low power variable optic paired with an Aimpoint ACRO P-2 red dot sight, enhancing target acquisition capabilities across various engagement ranges. Additionally, the rifle is equipped with the KAC QDC/MCQ-PRT suppressor, designed to reduce muzzle flash and sound signature while mitigating the adverse effects commonly associated with suppressor use, such as increased gas blowback and fouling.
Below: Note that this KS-1 seems to have a thermal clip-on, adding a new spectrum to look at.
Below: Been there, done that. A UK Commando fires from the prone position during the Cold Weather Warfare Course. This grueling test includes a 10km cross-country ski sprint followed by rifle shooting from various positions. Troops compete in teams, relying on teamwork and resilience in sub-zero temperatures. As part of Winter Deployment 25, the UK Commando Force is reaffirming its Arctic commitment, with over 2,000 personnel—Royal Marines, 24 Commando Royal Engineers, 29 Commando Royal Artillery, Commando Helicopter Force, and supporting units—training in Northern Norway to sharpen their cold-weather warfare skills.
