[IDEX 2025] M84M – Modernised GPMG from Zastava Arms

At the IDEX 2025, Zastava Arms from Serbia presented their version of modernized PKM called M84M. There are a few key improvements: the M84M machine gun has a Picatinny rail on the receiver cover and elevated iron sights. The rear sight is attached to the rail. M84M also has a new stock that resembles FN MAG.

While modernized AKs are very popular all over the world, upgraded PK/PKMs are far less common. However, standard PKM has the same drawbacks as any old AK and can be easily improved with the addition of a few additional parts.

In many units all over the world, machine gunners had to upgrade their guns at their own expense, which was a challenge, since the market for PKM accessories is not nearly as large as the one for AK. In recent years, manufacturers realized that demand is there and started manufacturing upgraded machineguns.

Standard M84 from Zastava Arms

The Zastava M84M also features a KeyMod handguard. While in the US, this standard is becoming less popular, in Serbia, it was used for the new generation service rifle called M19. James Reeves had a chance to test this rifle when he visited the factory.

Another simple improvement is a cotton ammunition box. Those who used PKM, especially on recon missions, know that the original metal box produces a constant clanking sound. Over the years, various units have looked for a solution, even trying to line ammunition boxes with polyurethane, but a soft ammunition box seems to be the best choice.

Previously, I wrote about the history of M84, which was called Ceca or “The Sower of Death” by different sides during the Bosnia War. With those updates, the M84M will be popular among special units that use PKM and want to have an opportunity to utilize modern sighting systems.
