HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Compensated 1911 or Unexpected Depression?

Welcome everyone to the 243rd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal? Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the custom Krebs AK-47 was a hot gat.

At this time the original auction is still up without any bids on the 9×39 AK pattern rifle. We can only hope at this time that this certified Hot Gat will find its way to a new home very shortly.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a custom Springfield 1911 chambered in .45 ACP. As is tradition, this ‘two-world-wars’ chambered gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $3,985 Starting Bid or Buy It Now.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Compensated 1911 or Unexpected Depression?

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“With only $3000 of custom work on a $1000 pistol, this 1911 is finally competition ready.” – Benjamin F.“When you buy a pistol for 1000 dollars and put 3000 dollars of work into it, with the hopes that someday it might be worth… 1000 dollars.” – Hop“Nyet, 1911 is fine” – Matt M.

Selling this modern take on a retro gat is GunBroker seller STEELHEART TACTICAL, located in Alliance OH. Let’s see what they had to say about this compensated 1911:

“Ah the 1911, a pistol design so iconic that over a 100 years later its owners and fanbase will never let you forget that. That Glock you own, yeah it sucks. Oh there’s a new striker fired…yeah no one cares. Because John Moses Browning could do no wrong. So rather than start with something new and modern lets start with old tried and true and try to race it up.”

I should have added a trigger warning. I’m sure dozens of boomers are now stretching their fingers to fill my inbox full of “you’re an idiot” messages. Trust me, I like a good 1911 as much as the next guy, but you guys drive me crazy. I think the real mind numbing part of this is that it’s in .45 ACP. I’m sorry, but if you want to race out a pistol, pick a caliber with a little more velocity. At this point it feels like putting a spoiler on a Honda Civic. Trust me, you’re not going fast enough to justify that. I really wish I could get exited about this, but it looks like a really expensive way to get tinnitus. I bet the trigger is still good though, or at least someone will remind you of that.

What do you think? Is this Springfield 1911 V-16 worth the price tag just shy of $4k? Or are you better off leaning just about any other way? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
