New Mossberg 590R Shotgun With Rotary Safety

Mossberg has just updated its tactical shotgun lineup with four new models, all based around a long-respected pump-action design. The new Mossberg 590R introduces a rotary safety to the lineup, and there’s even a new mag-fed version of the shotgun as well.

Goodbye, tang safety

Mossberg’s pump actions have long been known for their tang safety (standard on the 500 and 590 series, and most derivatives except the Maverick 88). Currently, they are the only pumps produced in the USA with this feature, which makes it much easier for left-handed shooters to use the gun’s controls.

However, the tang safety makes it harder to use pistol grip furniture with the Mossberg design, so as the demand for tactical shotguns heats up, so does the interest in a shotgun designed with a different safety.

Also, if you want to use a shotgun as a Masterkey-style attachment underneath a tactical rifle, a tang safety mounted atop the shotgun is obviously a no-go, as you can’t use it with the rifle’s chassis in the way. A rotary safety on the side of the gun allows this type of use.

Mossberg remixes the 590 formula again, and as a result, we get four models: The 590R (the base model, with standard muzzle, 6+1 tube mag and collapsible AR-style stock); the 590R Stand-Off (with a stand-off style muzzle attachment, for breaching purposes); the 590RM (fed from a double-stack detachable magazine!) and the 590RM Stand-off (with, again, a stand-off muzzle attachment).

Obviously, these shotguns are mostly mechanically the same, with the exception of their magazine system and sights (Magpul MBUS 3 adjustable sights on the M-series guns). However, take note that the mag-fed models are currently only available in 2.75-inch chambering, with 10+1 capacity.

MSRP for the two 590R models is $1,085 each. The 590 RM models carry a $1,190 MSRP. See more details on each individual shotgun at Mossberg’s website here.

We’ve seen these before

Some readers might realize that we’ve seen these shotguns before, sort of.

Back at SHOT Show in 2024, Mossberg was showing off new tactical shotguns developed for a, uh, “military customer.” The features on those pump actions are basically what we see here on the new 590 series, as the video above will show.
