New CMP Rimfire League Announced at Lake Erie Arms

Rimfire shooting has always been the go-to starting point for anyone curious about marksmanship. Whether you’re plinking cans in the backyard, working on precision shots at the range, or dipping your toes into competition shooting, the long-lived and affordable .22LR is easy to shoot, and just plain fun. Now, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), in partnership with Lake Erie Arms in Ohio, is looking to bring that same energy indoors with their new CMP Rimfire Rifle League. From what I can gather from the press release below, the new CMP Rimfire League will be perfect for beginners looking for a no-pressure way to try competitive shooting, or seasoned shooters itching for some winter practice. In that case, this new league might just hit the mark for you, and it’s one that I hope we get to see spread rapidly to more shooting clubs across the nation.

New CMP Rimfire League Announced at Lake Erie Arms

After completing a successful Bullseye Pistol League in the fall, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is excited to announce a new competition series, partnered with Lake Erie Arms – the CMP Rimfire Rifle League, featuring electronic targets! The CMP Rimfire Rifle League is an indoor .22 caliber sporter rifle target competition, held Tuesdays from 5-8 p.m. at Lake Erie Arms and running from Jan. 14 to March 4, 2025. The league is suitable for those looking for an introduction into marksmanship competition as well as those looking for a fun challenge with friends or family. All experience levels are welcome, including juniors (ages 10 and up).The Rimfire Rifle League matches will be fired at 25 yards from three positions: prone, sitting/kneeling and standing. Competitors may choose from T-Class (telescopic sights), O-Class (standard sights) and TU-Class (tactical/unlimited, any sights) categories.Firing will be completed on CMP’s line of electronic targets, complete with a scoring monitor located beside each participant. The electronic targets deliver fast, accurate shot scores – offering an enhanced experience for individuals and quicker competition times! The same targets will also be used during the National Rimfire Sporter Match, part of the annual National Matches at Camp Perry, for the first time on July 20, 2025.Additionally, the CMP will host a Rimfire Rifle class prior to the start of the league for those wanting to learn more about the sport! Sign up for the CMP Rimfire Rifle League and find additional info at https://www.learms.net/current-leagues!

It’s interesting to note that CMP has decided to offer classes specifically designed around the competition – which is something a lot of people wonder about before going to any sort of firearms competition. In addition, from the text above it seems like you can bring pretty much whatever .22LR rifle you have in your gun safe – the equipment list is pretty generous.

Events like the CMP Rimfire Rifle League are about getting new shooters together, having a good time, and introducing new people to the competitive environment. I certainly hope this type of more accessible rimfire competition grows and expands so that more people can find a way to improve their skills on the range in a more enjoyable environment.
