X2 Dev Group Releases Trident Barrels for Builders
X2 Dev Group is taking the barrel technology at the heart of the AR-X Lightfighter series of rifles and making it available separately for agencies and hobbyists looking to get the most out of their AR. The AR-X Lightfighter rifle is known for its quick handling, accuracy, and consistent performance, a big part of which leans heavily on its Trident barrel.
The Boise, Idaho company promises that shooters no longer need to decide between weight savings and predictable performance, with a heavyweight barrel providing sustained accuracy at the cost of handling speed while lightweight barrels are traditionally quicker to handle but can suffer shot dispersion as they heat up. Expensive carbon fiber barrels address these concerns also, however, they too can have drawbacks like delamination after sustained strings of rapid fire.
X2 Dev Group claims to have resolved this dilemma with the Trident barrel, offering incredible accuracy potential, superior heat dispersion, and rigidity, all while weighing less than leading carbon fiber options.
According to X2 Dev Group, Trident barrels, guaranteed Sub-MOA with quality ammunition, exhibit extreme rigidity ensuring consistency and minimizing POI shift when mounting suppressors. This is due to specially timed flutes that act as opposing I-beams, providing structural integrity with reduced mass to maintain optimal barrel harmonics. Keeping all the performance of a 416R Stainless barrel, this design sees weight fall under that of leading carbon fiber barrels. Trident barrels are nitrided, impregnating the steel unlike coatings, for corrosion resistance and improved barrel life.
X2 Dev Group makes all Trident barrels in-house, optimizing the heat profile for consistent group dispersion through 473 degrees Fahrenheit, distributing the heat evenly to reduce heat soak and stress, which, combined with added rigidity, enhances POI predictability through longer strings of fire.
Trident barrels use a .750” journal and are available on X2 Dev Group’s website with a low-profile fixed gas block, a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block, or ready to accept the gas block of your choice. All Trident barrels feature M4 Feed Ramps, a 1/2×28 threaded muzzle, and are chambered in .223 Wylde with a 1:8 twist rate.
Barrel and weight information is as follows:
16” – Mid Length Gas – 21.5oz
14.5”- Mid Length Gas – 20.0oz
12.5” – Carbine Length Gas – 17.8oz
All three barrel options are available now on the X2 Dev Group website for an MSRP of $549 without gas block or muzzle device options.
What do you guys think of this barrel technology? Do the weight benefits, rigidity, and accuracy of a 416R stainless barrel add up to you, or are you more of a mil-spec cold hammer forged guy? Tell us in the comments below.
