Modern take, classic formula

While Savage Arms’ best-known historical model is their Model 99 lever-action rifle (and rightfully so!) the Model 24 over/under combo gun was also a very classic North American hunting/survival firearm. It came chambered in a wide range of rifle/shotgun cartridge combos, suitable for everything from big game and varmint hunting to backyard pest control and even bush pilot survival. Alas, it died off from the lineup just like the Model 99 did.

Years later, Savage revived the idea in the format of the Model 42. Make no mistake, the Model 42 is a much different firearm, but it’s the same basic idea: a break-action rifle/shotgun combo. However, unlike the Model 24, which came in centerfire or rimfire rifle options, and shotgun chamberings from 12 gauge to .410, the new Model 42 only comes chambered in .22 LR or .22 Magnum, and .410 for the shotgun barrel.

The barrel length on the Model 42 is 20 inches, with an overall length of 35.75 inches. Of course, that changes when you break the Takedown model into its separate pieces.

In standard form, the Model 42 comes in a black finish with red highlights.

New color options

But now, the takedown model comes in Olive Drab Green or Flat Dark Earth (FDE). Both the 22 Magnum/.410 model and the .22 LR/.410 models are available in either color choice. MSRP for the combo gun in the new tacticolors is $579, whichever hue you go with. For more deets, including information on how to find a dealer near you, check out SavageArms.com.
